Job Information

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Florida International University invites applicants for a tenured/tenure-track open-rank (Assistant, Associate or Full Professor) position in Environmental Engineering. Qualified senior candidates may be considered for tenured positions.

The Department is seeking individuals pursuing innovative, world-class, quantitative research contributions with engineering solutions that enhance community resilience and significantly impact the planning, design, operations, and management of environmental and civil engineering systems. Strong potential or a demonstrated record of teaching and mentoring students in environmental engineering and in courses that complement the CEE undergraduate and graduate curricula, including the development of new enriching courses is expected. Applicants with expertise in one or more of the following are especially encouraged to apply: environmental engineering; hazards, disasters, and risk reduction; sustainable design and analysis; sustainability of natural and man-made systems; environmental resource management; environmental infrastructure; alternative energy and materials and their relative life cycles and environmental impacts; advanced treatment processes for reuse, reclamation, and recycling; protection of natural ecosystems; resilience of environmental infrastructure under natural and human-induced stressors both in short- and long-terms; vulnerability and strengthening of coastal communities and their linked environments, including innovative approaches to limited freshwater water resources and system adaptation to climate extremes and variability; water quality engineering; state-of-the-art environmental remediation technologies to clean up contaminated sites and reduce the potential for contaminant mobility, fate and transport of contaminants in water, soil, and sediment.

The Department houses several major research centers and laboratories that offer unparalleled collaborative research opportunities including the Wall of Wind (WOW) that is an NSF Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI) Experimental Facility (EF), the Accelerated Bridge Construction University Transportation Center (ABC-UTC) – an US DOT Tier 1 UTC, the Wind Hazard and Infrastructure Performance Center (WHIP) – an NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC), and the Lehman Center of Transportation Research (LCTR). The Department also has a close relationship with the Extreme Events Institute and the Institute of Environment both of which are Preeminent Programs at FIU in support of the interdisciplinary collaborations for environmental science and engineering solutions. The FIU College of Engineering and Computing is expanding its impact in the four thrust areas: (i) infrastructure and resiliency, (ii) information technology and security, (iii) health, and (iv) clean energy. Candidates pursuing research at the interface of multiple areas in CEE, College of Engineering and across the university are highly desirable to create new opportunities for interdisciplinary teamwork and multidisciplinary research proposals.

The candidates must have an earned doctoral degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, or a closely related discipline. Evidence of research/scholarship is required. Industrial experience and/or experience of collaboration with industry partners is a plus. Registration as a Professional Engineer in Florida (or the ability to obtain such licensure within four years of employment) is preferred. The successful candidate will be expected to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, direct graduate students, and establish a strong externally funded research program in the areas of expertise.

Qualified candidates are encouraged to apply to Job Opening ID 527188 at https://facultycareers.fiu.edu and submit a single PDF file that includes:
