Job Information
The OER Coordinator works to facilitate the adoption and adaptation of open educational resources (OER)at FIU through advocacy, training, outreach, and organization. The OER Coordinator will collaborate with faculty from a broad range of disciplines, as well as students, staff, administrators, and consortiaI partners. This faculty librarian position will report to the Associate Dean for Technical Services and participates in the activities of library instruction, reference services, collection development, digital collections, and Access Services.
FIU became an OpenStax partner in 2017-18. The Pilot Program at FIU reported student savings to be estimated at $1,331,483.56, based largely on adoptions by faculty teaching courses via FIU Online in conjunction with their Affordability Counts initiative (https://devaffordabilitycounts.fiu.edu/). Working with FIU Online instructional designers and Affordability Counts staff, the successful candidate for this position will have a firm foundation on which to build, as FIU seeks to expand adoptions across courses in all delivery formats.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Provides leadership of efforts to inspire and recruit faculty to develop, adopt, and/or assess open educational resources for the benefit of students
- Coordinates initiatives to assist faculty with locating and adapting library resources and OER into their curriculum
- Collaborates with faculty librarians to coordinate selection of digital content and services in relation to OER initiatives
- Raises awareness of open educational resources across the campus, encouraging and generating broad participation by departments, faculty, and students through close collaboration with university partners for textbook affordability and OER efforts, including FIU Online, Center for the Advancement of Teaching, and Textbook Affordability Committee
- Leads development and implementation of OER policies relating to copyright, open licensing, and attribution of Creative Commons licensed materials
- Trains, educates, and guides faculty, students, and staff on open content production and publishing
- Collaborates with Digital Collection Center in outreach to encourage sharing faculty and student work in open access venues.
- Develops and shares metrics that assess the value of open content.
- Participates in collaborative activities such as library instruction, reference, assessment, library services and collection development.
- Serves on the T.A. Task Force as the resident expert on OER usage and increasing textbook affordability overall.
- Provides an annual report on OER adoption developments to the T.A. Task Force chair for inclusion in the annual report to the Board of Governors.
Minimum Qualifications:
MLIS from an accredited institution
Demonstrated knowledge of issues in open education, open textbooks, open access, copyright, and intellectual property
Knowledge of instructional or curriculum design, including experience with learning management systems.
Experience with web-based publishing, presentation tools, and various media types
Rank/Salary:
Non-tenured faculty status; rank and salary are competitive based on qualifications and experience.
