The Royal Caribbean Group has an exciting career opportunity for a full-time Lead, Technical Accounting reporting to the Senior Manager of Technical Accounting.

This position works on-site in Miami, Florida.

Position Summary:

The Lead, Technical Accounting, is responsible for assisting the Technical Accounting Group with a combination of duties including but not limited to those described below.

This role will be part of the Technical Accounting Group that partners with various finance and business teams to ensure they are provided with accurate accounting guidance to drive the business forward. This role will assist in the research, interpretation, and practical application of accounting guidance for both new and existing accounting standards. The ideal candidate is familiar with quarterly and annual SEC filings (i.e., 10-Qs, 10-K), and a self-starter that is passionate about diving into technical accounting subjects such as leases, revenue recognition, variable interest entities, business combinations, debt/equity instruments, and PP&E to name a few.

This role is an excellent opportunity to join a team that is focused on collaboration with various cross-functional groups throughout the organization when engaged to review contracts or other management prepared documents. We are looking for a candidate that is enthusiastic about technical reading and business writing, has great organization and communication skills, as well as a process improvement mindset. This role will also be responsible for the proper execution of key SOX controls such as drafting position papers for significant transactions and assisting with the implementation of new or amended accounting policies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides accounting guidance to business stakeholders by reviewing management’s contracts and drafting internal memos summarizing the key terms and related accounting analysis/conclusions.
  • Researches technical accounting questions and provides prompt assistance/responses to address internal accounting consultations.
  • Drafts position papers addressing the accounting for significant transactions, including financing arrangements, joint ventures, and several other types of transactions.
  • Interacts with individuals throughout the company to understand fact patterns underlying various transactions and provide real-time accounting feedback.
  • Monitors new accounting pronouncements, assists in implementing new standards, and drafts relevant disclosures for SEC filings (10-Qs and 10-Ks).
  • Leads and participates in preparation of accounting presentations, including developing content and presenting to a 30+ person audience. Presentations can either be on ad-hoc finance and accounting topics, or focused on delivering CPE credits to those carrying CPA licenses.
  • Leads and participates in recurring meetings with various finance and business teams such as Destination Development, Treasury, Corporate Development, etc. This includes preparation of agenda and monitoring progress of contract reviews.
  • Assists in the preparation of new or amended accounting policies, ensuring compliance with US GAAP.
  • Leads and participates in quarterly and quarterly/annual technical accounting projects such as impairment, embedded derivatives, and reportable segment reviews.
  • Evaluates transaction impacts for key non-GAAP metrics including but not limited to Return on Invested Capital (ROIC), and Adjusted EPS, as well as impacts to Critical Accounting Policies, Statement of Cashflows, and other Company Metrics/Disclosures.
  • Assists SEC reporting team as needed including review/preparation of disclosure checklists, press release tie-outs, and other analysis supporting SEC filings.
  • Ensures proper execution of key SOX controls, including coordination with internal and external auditors.
  • Responsible for special projects and any ad hoc requests from senior management.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; Advanced educational degrees (i.e., MAcc, MBA) would be considered a plus.
  • Minimum of five years’ related work experience, with Big 4 public accounting experience preferred but not required.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in active and good standing.
  • Self-starter with a strong desire to learn and dedication to delivering a high-quality work product.
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal), with experience in presenting ideas/concepts to varying levels of management.
  • Experience in performing US GAAP technical accounting research and drafting technical memos to support conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret and apply complex accounting standards (e.g., ASC 842, ASC 810).
  • Ability to interpret complex legal agreements for purposes of assessing and applying appropriate accounting treatment.
  • Proficient in drafting clear and thorough written communications (e.g., memos, presentations, emails).
  • Exceptional critical thinking skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to prioritize tasks and handle multiple deliverables in a fast-paced/deadline-driven environment.
  • Takes initiative in managing processes and delivering results with minimal oversight.
  • Ability to interact and develop strong partnerships with varying levels of management.
  • Proactively identifies opportunities for improvement and initiates change.
  • Comfortable using and learning technology (e.g., Microsoft Office products, Workiva, Oracle SaaS, PowerBI, Agiloft, etc.)
