Position Summary:
The Design Director provides a primary leadership role and expertise to the new building projects as assigned by the EVP of New Buildings. In doing so, the incumbent continually directs the activities of architects, designers, and computer aided design professionals to achieve brand specific design concept goals for the various brands. Also serves as a conduit of information and intelligence from the corporation and/or the brand to the design staff, and outside architects/design firms, ensuring the success of these groups.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Directs, develops and maintains entire overall design process for all assigned projects, forming and maintaining brand specific design concepts. Ensures that brand concepts are apparent and credible and fulfill the voice of the Corporation and each Brand, which continues our culture of design innovation.
- Fosters and leads highly collaborative forums used in developing total brand conceptual program per ship and class. Strives for unique first-in-class design thinking. Participates in Brand Think Tank groups with representatives of other departments and functions as a creative design leader.
- Evaluates the talent and effort of architects, designers and consultants. Monitors the quality and suitability of their work, ensuring that design goals are met, and provides feedback to them using brand concepts as target. Effectively communicates brand concepts to global building site offices and shipyards, leads troubleshooting issues and resolving related matters.
- Presents large to small-scale presentations at executive level and other groups, using a variety of media to compellingly convey design and give recommendations. Works with subordinate managers and staff members to achieve on time, on cost and high-quality delivery of department projects.
- Analyzes and compares statistics, ratios, and other metrics of various ships within our fleet and across our competition, bringing forth observations, conclusions, and recommendations.
- Creates planning models that support the organization's mission and value based on an internal and external needs assessment and monitors the external environment to identify opportunities required to execute the department's strategy.
- Confers with peer management in Newbuilding and other key departments to ensure objectives are met. Manages customer relationships at all levels. Participates with senior management in the development of long-range planning and objectives including budgetary matters.
- Evaluates monthly and quarterly results. Has appropriated financial and budget reports prepared including cost and time reports and project status reports.
- Attracts, trains, grows, rewards, and retains diverse talent. Provides professional development of staff through mentoring, performance management, and career planning. Effectively communicates the department’s values and culture through words and actions.
- Exercises the usual authority of a director concerning staffing, performance appraisals, promotions, salary recommendations and terminations
- Performs related duties as required with or without accommodation, and performs other duties as required.

Financial Responsibilities:
- Management of multimillion dollar projects in range of $1.5 billion or more for newbuilds.
- Works with senior management budgetary planning. Exercises judgment on higher level cost issues.
- Oversees and is accountable for yard building cost complexity balancing, architectural & design fees, design administrative hours, expenses (travel, phones, supplies), cost control of signage, artwork, carpeting and loose furnishings
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Interior Design or Architecture required; Architectural background preferred. MBA preferred.
- Minimum requirement of 15 years’ experience within design industry, preferred within mid to large high-end hospitality environment. Minimum of 5 years managing multi-million-dollar projects.
- Proven management experience with direct subordinate manager(s) and staff.
- Ability to travel internationally or domestically 25% of the time.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Excellent interpersonal skills with strong ability to effectively communicate with all levels of management and employees, across diverse cultures around the world.
- Requires a high level of written and verbal communication skills to convey aesthetic concepts and requirements of the Design group to technical and non-technical individuals. Is effective at simplifying complexity.
- Requires strong teamwork and collaborative leadership skills to develop rapport within the department, with other departments, and externally.
- Possesses self-motivation with ability to mobilize people and resources to action, within a high-paced environment
- Working knowledge of personal computers with associated presentation, communication, and financial software packages.
