The Defensive Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing the defense for the football team. This includes creating defensive strategies, managing the coaching staff for the defensive unit, and ensuring all defensive players are well-prepared for competition. The Defensive Coordinator will collaborate with the Head Coach and other coaching staff to design effective defensive game plans, lead the defensive staff, and ensure the defense performs at the highest level throughout the season.

Essential Functions:

• Coordinate with the Head Coach and offensive coordinator to create a balanced team strategy and ensure game plans are cohesive.
• Design and oversee defensive schemes, including alignment, coverage, blitz packages, and run defense, ensuring effective preparation for each opponent.
• Adjust defensive strategies in real-time during games based on the flow of the game, player performance, and opponent adjustments.
• Coach the defensive players, providing both individual and group instruction in technique, fundamentals, and overall defensive concepts.
• Identify key areas of development for players and work to address weaknesses while enhancing strengths.
• Foster a culture of discipline, accountability, and mental toughness within the defensive unit.
• Study and analyze opponents' offenses by breaking down game film to prepare for upcoming matchups, developing a detailed game plan.
• Lead the defensive staff in evaluating and preparing for game situations, ensuring all players understand their roles in the game plan.
• Assist the Head Coach and recruiting staff in scouting and recruiting defensive talent at the high school, junior college, or transfer portal levels.
• Communicate effectively with the Head Coach regarding team goals, defensive performance, and adjustments to be made for upcoming games.
• Supervise and manage the defensive coaching staff, ensuring that all defensive position coaches are executing their responsibilities effectively.
• Provide feedback on player performance, addressing any issues and ensuring that all players are progressing.
• Make real-time tactical decisions regarding substitutions, formations, and in-game defensive schemes.
• Performs miscellaneous and other job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

• In-depth knowledge of defensive football strategies, including various formations, blitzing techniques, coverage schemes, and situational defense.
• Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills to manage the defensive staff and motivate players.
• Experience with film analysis and the ability to break down opponent tendencies to create detailed and effective defensive game plans.
• Ability to lead and develop coaching staff, ensuring their success and growth.
• Ability to work collaboratively with other coaches, athletes, and administrative staff.
• Strong recruiting skills to assess and attract defensive talent to the program.
• Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to fifty (50) pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.

Minimum Requirements:

• Bachelor's Degree (preferred) in Sports Management, Physical Education, or a related field.
• Previous coaching experience, preferably at the collegiate or professional level, focusing on the defensive line.
• Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours.
