The Area Coordinator (AC) oversees a dynamic living-learning residential area for first-year, transfer, second-year, and/or continuing residential students. The AC assists in administrating and managing the overall housing and residence life program by serving approximately 800 residents and managing residence halls and/or apartments. The university seeks an individual with a strong interest in working at a mission-driven institution. Supervise area Resident Assistants on all aspects of the residential experience and related policies and processes. The role of an AC in working with students and the responsibilities of the position are significantly tied to the strategic plan of FMU, Ascension to Excellence, and tethered to the Mission of creating global citizens through character, leadership, accountability, scholarship, and service. This customer-centric role is responsible to deliver service excellence support to meet the needs of our university community.

Essential Functions:

The AC provides 24-hour oversight of a specific residential area housing for one or multiple residential areas. The residential program encompasses a first year living and learning program, a second-year program with significant campus-partner collaboration, and upper-class housing options. The AC fosters individual growth and personal development of the Resident Assistants, hall council members, and all residents alike.

  • The Area Coordinator provides first-line crisis intervention and is the first responder for emergency situations and enforces university policies.
  • Reach out to students identified as needing support, as well as students identified through weekly wellness reports.
  • Ensure area programming (Living and Learning Center (LLC), Hall Council, and Resident Assistant (RA) events) aligns with the LLC theme and/or the Co-curricular Learning Outcomes.
  • The Area Coordinator plays a central role in supporting first-year and/or upper-division students' success. The Area Coordinator develops a welcoming and inclusive community where all residents feel that they matter and belong.
  • Lead and implement components of Fall New Student Orientation, including welcoming new students to their community on Move-In Day and Residential Community Meetings with area residents. Direct resident assistants to carry out their integral roles in the orientation program.
  • Develop resident assistants' ability to be successful in all aspects of the position through both developmental and technical supervision.
  • In collaboration with Admissions, Academic Engagement, Student Success First Year Experience (FYE), and the Orientation staff, develop and facilitate the comprehensive annual Fall and Spring student leader training programs for residential education, learning community, and orientation student leaders.
  • Rotate responsibility for on-call evening duty, weekend duty, and some holiday duty. On-call responsibilities include responding to emergencies, referral to campus resources, and crisis intervention. Must be available via phone and within a reasonable distance off campus as determined by the Director of Housing and Residence Life.
  • Analyze cases from the perspective of multiple colleagues for the purpose of holistic response and professional development.
  • Act as liaison with Campus Safety, Counseling Center, Residence Life, and Campus Ministry.
  • Manage the room condition process including inventorying and reviewing the condition of all resident rooms. Determine charges and request necessary repairs. Follow-up with maintenance and custodial service requests.
  • Assist as needed with the resident room-change process
  • Other duties as assigned as appropriate based on University and Student Affairs strategic planning initiatives and departmental goals

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Be able to advise students as necessary and refer them to the University Counseling Center as appropriate.
  • Provide resources and guidance regarding academic advising.
  • Be able to maintain confidentiality and comply with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) standards; refrain from, and discourage the discussion of, confidential information.
  • Is knowledgeable of the Student Code of Conduct and Residence Life Community Standards as well as the rationale for all policies. Communicates directly and through resident assistants the Code and Standards to residents. Ensures resident assistants are knowledgeable of the Code and Standards and are confident in regularly and consistently enforcing policies.
  • Work collaboratively with a variety of constituencies from diverse backgrounds.
  • Possess strong writing abilities and organizational skills.
  • Ability to appraise the quality/condition of residential life.
  • Work effectively with the off-campus city and law enforcement officials and FMU Department of Campus Safety.
  • Effective analytical and decision-making skills. Excellent communication (oral and written), organizational, and time management skills. Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse constituents.
  • Attention to detail and adaptability to a changing environment is extremely important as well as dependability. Demonstrate a high level of professionalism, initiative, resourcefulness, and personal accountability.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, and LinkedIn Learning, as well as knowledge and understanding of the organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures. Familiar with the Jenzabar technology suite for higher education.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling objects of average weight up to fifty (50) pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred in student development, counseling, or related area strongly preferred. An advanced degree can be counted towards the experience requirement, substituting for one year of experience.
  • Equivalent of two academic years’ experience in Residential Life or highly relatable student affairs experience with transferable skills.
  • Experience with advising student groups.
  • Experience coordinating and/or facilitating small-scale programming.
  • Experience as a Resident Assistant or Community Director/Resident Director is strongly preferred.
  • Experience responding to crisis and/or early intervention (i.e. on-call for emergency response, conflict mediation, responding to medical or mental health emergencies, fire alarms, etc.) preferred.
  • Experience participating on committees and/or working groups preferred.
  • Experience reporting and following up on maintenance, safety, and security concerns of building facilities preferred.
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred.
  • Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours.
