BENEFITS & PAYROLL SPECIALIST

The Benefits & Payroll Specialist shall have primary responsibility for supporting the Office of Human Resources in ensuring the accurate and timely processing of all payroll and benefit-related functions in compliance with university policies & procedures, and state, federal, and local laws/regulations. This position will report to the Associate/Director of Human Resources
Essential Functions:
- Responsible for performing accurate and timely processing of the University's payroll on a bi-weekly basis, including off-cycle processing as needed. This will involve data entry of payroll details into the University's HRIS, reconciliation of payroll batches, and payroll management report requests. Required to enter time allowances/accruals and review for accuracy and completeness of personnel compensation information, deductions, and earnings.
- Administering employee benefit programs such as open enrollment, retirement plans, leave and time-off (including leave of absence administration), wellness initiatives, and workers' compensation in compliance with carrier contracts. This includes organizing benefit fairs, mediating benefit eligibility, and payment issues for maximum coverage to benefit-eligible employees.
- Ensuring the issuance of a monthly benefits newsletter and assisting employees and retirees with all benefit-related matters, explaining benefit policies to those enrolled in health, retirement, and/or disability plans. This will involve coordinating employee benefits claims, workers' compensation claims, COBRA, and FMLA.
- Ensuring the integrity of employee demographic and employment data as well as the maintenance of all personnel, benefits, and payroll information. This will involve preparing periodic reports, schedules, and reconciliations and participating in the year-end closing process and annual audit. Process the preparation and submission of all federal and state payroll tax reports.
- Performance of general office duties such as answering phone calls, messaging, maintaining records management database systems, receiving visitors, and coordinating the distribution of checks.
- The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that logically relate to the position.

- Moderate physical activity. Requires handling objects of average weight up to fifty (50) pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.

Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration, or related fields.
- 2+ years of experience directly related to the responsibilities specified can be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Accounting, bookkeeping, and payroll experience preferred.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite and knowledge and understanding of the organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.
- Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours.
