Position Summary:

The Senior Director of Research Integrity and Grants Administration is responsible for the oversight, operation and execution of all functions of the Offices of Grants & Sponsored Programs (GSP) & Financial Grants Management (FGM). The Senior Director is accountable for leading all aspects of the grants process at Barry University.

The Senior Director will engage senior leadership and faculty/staff in identifying priorities and needs to advance the University’s mission. This position manages sponsored programs strategies that have broad impact across the University and will achieve the goals of the University’s Strategic Plan. The Senior Director will actively manage GSP and FGM operations under broad direction of the Provost. This includes managing external-grant requests and award activity to federal, state, for-profit and non-profit sponsors.

The Senior Director will supervise teams in Grants and Sponsored Programs (pre-award) and Financial Grants Management (post-award). The position will collaborate with Finance, University Advancement and Legal Affairs to ensure customer-forward compliant operations. The Senior Director will work with Deans, AVPs, VPs, Faculty, Staff, and External Stakeholders, including Program Officers for the overall impact of achieving significant external funding.

Prior experience in a university grants position is required. Work will be performed on Barry’s Main campus in Miami Shores with some travel required to Barry’s Orlando Campus.

Essential Functions:

Research Development/Program Development Functions:

  • Promotes relationships with internal and external stakeholders for the benefit of the university.

  • Creates learning opportunities and grant seeking/writing/managing workshops to University Faculty/Staff.

  • Represent the university externally within professional organizations or in the greater community.

  • Oversees the university’s internal seed grant program (Provost’s Catalyst Grant).

Pre-Award Functions:

  • Supervises the Director of Grants and Sponsored Programs.

  • Implements processes to locate/screen/targeted distribution of grant opportunities.

  • Oversees compliant application approval and submission, under the delegated authority of the Provost.

  • Advises and trains GSP personnel on all pre-award activities (including budget development).

  • Develops agreements, letters of intent/support for signature by the President, Provost, or VP of Finance, as required by granting agency.

  • Advises internal stakeholders on grant and contract-related rules and regulations.

  • Ensures timely submission of all proposal documents, including compliance with university’s internal deadline policy.

  • Prior to acceptance of award, negotiate any budgetary revisions and submit any just-in-time paperwork.

  • Upon receipt of award (and as needed), negotiate agreement terms and conditions.

  • Negotiate any award modifications and extensions.

  • Advise project personnel on matters concerning interpretation of award terms and conditions.

Post-Award Functions:

  • Supervises the Director of Financial Grants Management.

  • Oversees the smooth transition from Pre-Award to Post-Award.

  • Ensures timely and accurate financial reporting to all institutional and sponsor authorities.

  • Ensures timely and accurate subrecipient risk-assessment and monitoring of all subawards and subcontracts.

  • Ensure project personnel have adequate knowledge and support to successfully manage their awards, optimize their award spending, and therefore capture maximum indirect cost recovery.

  • Oversee the approval of all award-related expenditures.

  • Oversee FGM’s facilitation of the annual sponsored programs audit.

Leadership Functions:

  • Supervises 2 direct reports and oversees both GSP and FGM offices.

  • Establishes goals and objectives for department and staff.

  • Meets periodically with Provost to apprise of departmental progress.

  • Attends and actively participates in Academic Affairs Council.

  • Directs of the execution of the Department’s strategic plan.

  • Develop short- and long-term plans which align with the University’s Strategic Plan.

  • Develops and maintains departmental budget.

  • Tracks and reports the activities of the department as may be requested.

  • Oversees the management of indirect cost recovery funds, on behalf of the Provost.

  • Protects the institution by assuring all proposals and awards are in compliance with federal, state, university, and sponsor guidelines.

  • Oversees continuous process improvement to ensure optimal procedures and compliance with federal, state, university, and sponsor guidelines.

  • Completes special projects as assigned

  • Serves as university Authorized Organizational Representative (AOR).

    Qualifications and Requirements:

    • Masters in Business Administration or similar (or higher) required.

    • Three or more years of experience in research administration (in higher education a plus).

    • Broad working knowledge of federal grant funding rules and regulations.

    • Broad knowledge of Research Development, Pre-Award, and Post-Award management.

    • Experience in compliance management (or a desire to learn).

    • Experience submitting proposals to NSF, NIH, US Dept of Education, NEA, and state of Florida agencies.

    • Knowledge of and experience with Grants.gov, Research.gov, eRA Commons, HRSA EHBs, and various other online submission/reporting portals.

    • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to develop relationships with stakeholders.

    • Strong customer service skills

    • Ability to edit, proofread, and discern a proposal’s compliance with sponsor solicitations.

    • Strong commitment to the mission and core commitments of Barry University.

    • Successful completion of a criminal background check.
