The Director for Ministry and Community Outreach provides leadership and direction in the development of programs and services that support students’ personal and spiritual development, including oversight of Volunteer Initiatives, Cor Jesu Chapel, Food Pantry, Barry Urban Garden, and Campus Democracy programs. The Director is responsible for representing the Catholic, Dominican identity and promoting ecumenical, interfaith, and community outreach programs that support the multicultural and diverse student body.

Provide oversight to student volunteering, community engagement, and civic learning programs:

  • Oversee major days of service, including International Coastal Cleanup Day, Food Security Day, Founders’ Day, MLK Day, and Sustainability Saturday.
  • Cultivate ongoing and collaborative relationships with community partners for volunteer opportunities and programs.
  • Manage marketing and promotion efforts, student registration, orientation and reflection activities, transportation, food, and event logistics.
  • Facilitate service requirement for ORI 100 students and instructors.
  • Expand and assist with service projects in partnership with Clubs/Orgs, Athletics, Stamps.
  • Partner closely with Experiential Learning team to embed service activities into co-curricular pathways and with Student Life team to involve student leaders/clubs/orgs.
  • Co-Chair Campus Democracy Project committee with the goal of increasing student engagement in civic learning initiatives.
  • Provide leadership and vision for student advocacy programs such as Peace Week, Earth Week, First Generation student programs, Christmas Tree Lighting, Food Pantry, and Urban Garden.
  • Plan and implement the annual Environmental Leadership Experience trip to the Adrian Dominican Sisters Motherhouse.
  • Establish an Alternative Breaks programs that includes funding for student participation.
  • Track attendance and service hours in Engage/GivePulse platforms.
  • Assess student engagement and community impact.

Promote religious and spiritual formation programs and services:

  • Oversee University Chaplain role, including daily and Sunday Mass, university-wide liturgies and celebrations, RCIA, memorial services, etc.
  • Supervise, coordinate, schedule, and maintain liturgical services, spaces, and items, including Cor Jesu Chapel.
  • Facilitate Barry University’s interfaith committee, comprised of faculty and staff from different faith traditions through action or dialogue, and to host programs each semester that provide opportunities for collaboration and conversation.
  • Understands, values and promotes the Roman Catholic tradition, Dominican heritage and Adrian sponsorship of Barry University and how these foundations root the institution's mission and core commitments.

Provide leadership and direction for the Food Pantry:

  • Supervise Coordinator that manages day to day operations of the Food Pantry.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with community partners, including Feeding South Florida and Good Samaritans (Trader Joe’s) for food delivery and donations.
  • Submit funding requests to Grants and Advancement for ongoing fundraising campaigns, grant proposals, alumni donations, etc.
  • Manage reporting for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Oversee the AmeriCorps VISTA grant, including annual and quarterly reports, evaluations, VAD, and MOUs of VISTA member.
  • Track usage through Engage/Corq platform and provide data for reports and assessment purposes

Provide oversight of the Barry Urban Garden (BUG)

  • Supervise Coordinator that manages day to day operations of the BUG.
  • Establish goals and metrics to create a permaculture garden that is both visually appealing and provides produce that can be harvested and donated to community fridges.
  • Develop partnerships with local elementary schools.
  • Oversee the AmeriCorps VISTA grant, including annual and quarterly reports, evaluations, VAD, and MOUs of VISTA member.
  • Identify opportunities for service projects, student volunteering, and collaborations with community partners.

Provides leadership and direction for staff and oversee departmental operations:

  • Works closely with the Associate Vice President for Engagement in the development and management of department goals and objectives and providing leadership to create a campus environment that promotes student learning, reinforces student development concepts and creates a vibrant campus life.
  • Contribute to divisional and university goals that support the university’s Strategic Agenda.
  • Oversee budget allocation and approval process as well as manage department cost centers, prioritizing spending for effective project implementation, and identifying grant opportunities.
  • Provide supervision, professional development, monitor employee performance, and provide feedback following HR policies and procedures.
  • Represent the department at university-wide and external committees, conferences, and events.
  • Evaluate the achievement of departmental goals, quarterly, annual, SACs, as needed for reports and other data requests.
